FRIDAY ART PICK: CAMILLE ROSE GARCIA
When bedtime stories cross with pop surrealism the result is the haunting graphics of Los Angeles artist Camille Rose Garcia. In a kindergarten wasteland style, Garcia's paintings, sculptures and prints present a jarring Gothic underbelly fairytale. Her emaciated female figures are reminiscent of Joanna Lumley in James and the Giant Peach while many of her paintings have the color scheme of Disney's animated Sleeping Beauty. This Disney parallel comes as no surprise. Growing up in the suburbs of Orange County, Garcia was a frequent childhood visitor to Disneyland and cites Walt Disney as a creative influence, perhaps the reason the melting appearance of her paintings feel like someone's bad acid trip at Fantasyland. Garcia displays - not as subtly as Disney's cartoons, but still as bewitchingly– an exposed capitalist utopia through the eyes of a comic fantasy world. Her intentionally lowbrow, vivid artwork has been featured in Rolling Stone magazine and urban culture zine, Juxtapoz, and her exhibits came be seen at the Jonathan Levine Gallery as well as other prestigious NYC galleries. Check it out, but don't blame us if it triggers a “monster in the closet” flashback.

Shelter Closing Party
@ The Loft
711 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis
10pm / 18+/ $10
It's been hyped about, it's been mourned over, but the inevitable last night of Shelter is finally upon us. For the last five months, Shelter parties have been MPLS' ticket for weekly techno and minimal dance music. Solo DJs were able to show off their pristine mixing skills over an elaborate Hush sound system, filling the sonic atmosphere with astounding four hour sets. Tonight's closing party features special guest Derek Plaslaiko, a resident DJ at the Bunker in NYC. Plaslaiko has shared stages with infamous and respected techno luminaries such as Matthew Dear and Tadd Mullinix and was honored by the Village Voice as New York's Best Techno DJ in a 2006 “Best Of” poll. Also tonight, Shelter promoter and DJ DVS and techno enthusiast Sharolyn Hagen will be celebrating their birthdays. Wish them birthday love and support the last night of a great dance party run.

Ah, stereotypes. This hilarious typecasting of scene-mongers picks on hipsters, emo kids, party girls and hardcore dudes, diagramming every detail from skinny jeans to an over the top haircut, band t-shirts and gratuitous tattoos. Not only is the site entertaining, but almost an anthropological look at the trends of today. With vivid illustrations and equally witty copy, this site is one that deserves the cult following that is quickly accruing. And, if you're so inclined (or have an extra $200 lying around) you can provide a photo and list of accessories and you can get your own portrait done up! Merry Krishnas: Works By Andy Messerschmidt
@ Fox Tax Gallery
503 1st Ave NE
Minneapolis
6-11pm / Free
Minnesota artist Andy Messerschmidt believes in objectification. The objectification of paintings that is. For his first solo exhibit in Minneapolis, Messerschmidt's focus is on transforming paintings from voyeuristically passive to something the viewer is an active participant in. With artwork that extends the boundaries of the canvas and resembles a collage, Messerschmidt allows his work to be gazed upon, not through. The opening reception for this exhibit is tonight, and the show runs through January 9th. Fox Tax Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

ohGr
@ Station 4
201 E. Fourth St.
Saint Paul
8pm / $20/ +18
IDM fans remember the heavily distorted vocals and dark synths from Canadian '80s band Skinny Puppy. Their theatrical live performances lead to a devoted cult following and the band's electro-industrial sound became a sub-genre for industrial and noise wave music. When members went their separate ways in the mid '90s, lead vocalist Nivek Ogre and producer Mark Walk developed the project ohGr. OhGr will be at Station 4 tonight, playing tracks off the new album Devils in my Details. Expect the same ostentatious shenanigans as a Skinny Puppy show (more fake blood than the set of Carrie 2) but as far as the music, ohGr's sound is a bit electro-pop meets metal and the lyrics are much lighter.
Bonus: The artwork on ohGr's second album SunnyPsyOp was contributed by this week's Friday Art Pick artist Camille Rose Garcia.

Solid Gold's new release Bodies of Water has been lighting our iPods on fire since its release, and is nothing short of amazing. The pairing of these two bands at the Nomad might just be what you need to shake off your holiday hangover.

Project, Project. (Look, listen, dance, repeat)
@ Kitty Cat Klub
315 14th Ave SE
Minneapolis
9pm / $5/ 21+
In the MPLS scene, you never have to choose between one cultural love or the other. If you know where to look, you can always find an event with the right blend of art, music, film and even dancing. The first installment of Project, Project is a perfect example. Tonight's “multimedia playground” showcases the artwork and graphic designs of UK artist Miss Lotion and local artist J.R. Sutton and the Award winning stop-motion films of international group, PES. Live visuals from Wisconsin's Beeple and local artist John Thompson project during the night for the ultimate in visual stimulation. Electronic laptop rock from Nobot and the smooth, sexy electronic music of Estate will have you grooving robotically on the dance floor; and when live bands aren't tearing up the stage, DJ Bach keeps the music flowing with tracks that will tickle your auditory senses.

A TINY MACHINE MONDAY
Our weekly post from Twin Cities sci-fi/beauty blogger A Tiny Machine!
Life is Good
This weekend my friend gave a few of us a tour of the new Tetsumi Kudo retrospective Garden of Metamorphosis at the Walker Art Center (it's pretty nice being friends with the tour manager). It's the Japanese artist's first solo show in the United States, and though he's a major influence in Asia and Europe, he remains fairly obscure in the American art vernacular. A lot of his work is relatively straightforward, albeit provocative (An installation piece featuring over a hundred flaccid phalluses (phalli?), one of which was ejaculating postcards of famous pieces of art. You know, just your everyday ejaculation of culture). However, some of the works are incredibly challenging and I was grateful to have a friend who could explain his motives and ideas in such an accessible way. I am now officially a huge fan of his work, and am even considering making my own DIY versions of his birdcage and terrarium pieces to give to friends for creepy holiday gifts.
