Weekend What's What 9/3-9/8

GREENERY/SCENERY

A collective whining could be heard throughout the land this week, as students of all ages had to shake their summer sass for a more scholarly demeanor. Despite this unofficial declaration that poor ol' summer is on its deathbed, we still look ahead to the lovely Autumn season in Minnesota, where wools and velvets and cashmeres can be factored into flirty Fall fashions. We here at l'étoile are still holding out hope for a bit more summer sun, so whatever you do this weekend -- and we've got more than a few good suggestions -- take a moment to enjoy the greenery, as it's definitely fleeting.

The Warriors

3258 Minnehaha Ave. S.

After a messianic/Malcolm X-esque leader who calls for the unification of the New York street gangs is assassinated, The Warriors – a misfit gang from Coney Island – is wrongfully blamed for the murder. What follows is a modernized version of The Odyssey with elements of Troma Entertainment cheese and violence, comic book hyperbole West Side Story confrontations with Village People adored thugs, a heavy handed racial and gender analysis, and screen full of buff pleather-vest-wearing eye candies. Hell hath no fury like a bored teenager with a baseball bat.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: THE XX

The xx are a new band out of the UK that sound like the next big thing that might actually be the next big thing. With a sound strikingly mature for their age, these 20-year-old cuties make predominantly slow, furtive pop music, mostly about sex. The result is strangely rewarding and slow burning, like the negative space in a painting, or the smell of fog and eucalyptus at dawn in California. It just works - except that, when it comes to The xx, there is so much more that just defies description or language; they are a band best listened to rather than discussed.

The problem is, however, that all the power-posts are too awesome for us to pick just one, so click through below and peruse such topics as "The top 10 embarrassing celebrity frangrance names," more horror movies, hot vampires, and just how much she adores Robyne Robinson.

Q&A with Glamorama Fashion Director Laura Schara

by Jahna Peloquin

Macy’s annual fashion event, Glamorama, has been around for 21 years – that’s longer than the storefront’s multiple incarnations (i.e., Dayton Hudson, Marshall Field’s) and its multiple changes in name (originally Fash Bash, the event was also called A Cause For Applause before finally settling on Glamorama). Year after year, the show’s organizers have done an amazing job of getting big-name designer collections – Marc Jacobs, we’re looking at you – shown in the Midwest. We sat down and talked with the woman largely responsible for that, Glamorama’s fashion director Laura Schara.

Jahna: We’re really excited to get the chance to talk to you about Glamorama. We’ve always been curious about how the show comes together year after year.

Laura: Of course!

Jahna: What are your responsibilities as Fashion Director for Glamorama?

Laura: My main role is that I secure all the designer segments for Glamorama, and I also hire all the models, freelance stylists, dressers, and alterations teams. I’m in charge of every single look - how it’s styled when it comes down the runway, and of course doing all the fittings – it’s a very meticulous process.

Jahna: How far out do you start planning the show? Can you give us a general timeline of when you do what?

Laura: It takes about a year and a half to work out the basic theme. It all starts in February at Fashion Week in New York, looking at all the fall collections. We want to make sure that we’re cohesive, and see if there are new designers who haven’t been featured before. Then I meet with designer reps in New York to select designer samples. I give them a list of looks that I’d like to receive based on our buy as well as the runway pieces - the ooh ahh looks that everyone wants to see. Also it’s set in a theater versus a tent, so we want to make sure they jump out the stage. Starting in March and April, we start doing model casting around the country. We look at around 400 to 500 models in L.A., New York, Chicago, and Minneapolis. We have two models in the show that are from Minneapolis. We have featured on Minnesotan model in the past (Dannielle Zephier with Moore) but this year a young gal with Vision (Greta Sundquist) really stuck out to us and had a great look.

Jahna: And right now?

Laura: Right now we are just reconfirming all the models – that is a huge puzzle, getting 40-some models here from all over the country. Working with numerous agencies from all over the country, getting them the info they need, all those little minute details - just getting those 40 bodies into one room is a huge task in itself. Fittings happen August 9 - we fit that show for approximately ten hours straight. It’s a long day, but we choose to fit as one long group so I can look at the group as one full collection instead of fitting individual times to make sure the segments are looking cohesive. We continue to tweak the looks when we got into dress rehearsal later in the week. I’m also communicating with the designer looks to make sure the looks we are getting are coming in. Obviously there are other people who want the looks that are possibly being used for other shoots and events. We keep the samples for quite a long time – we have it for about three weeks. But the designers trust us and it’s a high-profile, high-end event that they really love. And (the reps) love to attend it..

Jahna: Who are your favorite designers? Marc Jacobs must be one of them.

Laura: We switch it up – Gaultier wasn’t in the show for a few years, same with Sonia Rykiel. Marc Jacobs is always in, he always seems to set the mood for other designers and trends. So when they agree to be in Glamorama we love it. Gaultier this year is fierce – it’s definitely going to be one of my favorites in the show. Just Cavalli is great, their segment is always hot and sexy. This year we have PHILOSOPHY di Alberta Ferretti – they’ve never been in the show before. (Ed. Note: Other designers in this year’s show are Sportmax, MaxMara, and CNC Costume National.)

Jahna: What are some of the fall trends you’re highlighting for this year’s show?

Laura: The whole rocker chic, ‘80s glam-rock look is definitely highlighted in the show this year, with everything from leather to studs to acid-washed denim. A lot of mixing prints and patterns, plaids, shoulder interest – the whole bold shoulder. There’s a lot of pinks and berries, hot pink being a huge trend for fall. You know you’ll hit every trend across the board with this designer list. There’s a great assortment of what you’ll see this fall. It’s very inspirational and they go very over the top but you’ll be able to interpret it your own way.

Jahna: Have you ever gotten to meet any of the designers?

Laura: I have, I have worked with Michael Kors in the past, I have met Diane Von Furstenberg. I have yet to meet Marc himself. I’ve been to the room sewing with Zac Posen - I’ve worked with his mom, right where they’re sewing the clothes, so that’s really cool to see.

Jahna: What’s the process for casting models? What do you look for?

Laura: Being it’s an hour-long show, there’s a lot of choreography that’s involved. Our models don’t walk down the runway with a blank store – we want our models to engage with our audience. I definitely look for a certain body shape because the clothing is samples. There’s a certain confidence we look for in a model’s walk. There are times we ask them to engage with the audience. We really diversified the group that we have, especially this year’s theme being “fusion.”

Macy's Glamorama: "A Night of Fashion and Fusion," featuring a look at fall designer collections and performances by Ne-Yo, the New Standards, and Kristinia DeBarge. 8 p.m. Fri. Orpheum Theatre, 910 Hennepin Av., Mpls. $75 (show only), $250+ for the show & post-party. www.childrenscancer.org.

Q&A: Former Minneapoline Blogger Tyler Stevermer

by Jahna Peloquin

Anyone spot Tyler Stevermer, former Minneapoline street fashion blogger, in Mpls a couple of weeks back? I spotted him at both the "Intersections" opening at the Goldstein and the Lookbook show at 501 Club, wearing this fabulous ensemble:

[Image by Ellen Dahl via The Minneapoline]

Apparently he is doing quite well since he's been in San Francisco, with quite a few projects going. I did a mini-interview with him to catch us up on all he's been up to:

What are you doing in town?

It had been well over a year since I had left and hadn’t revisited. I suddenly decided I needed to reflect on my perception: View my new life through my old perspective and my old life through my new perspective. Basically, I just spent a week having an existential crisis and getting drunk with my best friends.

What have you been keeping busy with since you moved away from Minneapolis?

I left in May of 2008. I kind of just ran away after graduating... I loved Minneapolis but knew I needed an adventure. I didn’t have any idea where to go so I ended up in New York. I fluttered around for a while until I moved to San Francisco (where I’ve been for nearly a year now). Currently I have my fingers in a lot of different pies. I work full time as an interior designer and branding director. In my down time I help out with the Harputs Own collection, have started doing a bit of writing for [Paris-based] Lurve magazine, and I volunteer with a fashion house that benefits the developmentally disabled called Helpers House of Couture. ...I’ve also been watching a lot of Golden Girls.

Tell me about your jacket. It's vintage, yes?

I found it at an AMAZING vintage boutique in San Francisco. There’s a guy there who knows exactly what I need. I went in one day and saw him dash directly into the back room, out he came with a cropped, quilted satin tuxedo jacket. He claimed Jeremy Scott had been in earlier and was studying it. I figured that was probably just his sales pitch but I loved the jacket anyway. From the same store I got a ridiculous pair of harem pants, they’re a single piece of fabric wrapped around to create each pant leg. Right after I had bought them, the designers at Givenchy had called up the store requesting the same pair to study for their next collection. The store owner said the designers would pay whatever I asked if they could have them. I decided to keep the pants for myself... I guess I’m a little bit of an asshole about my clothes.

I saw you earlier at the "Intersections" opening visiting with some past instructors. What did you think of the exhibition?

I used to work for the Goldstein during college and my former honors program advisor was the co-curator of the "Intersections" exhibit, so I was really happy to be in town for the opening. I think the Goldstein is an amazing resource for the Twin Cities. Their collection of mid-century fashion is unbelievable and you can actually make an appointment to see anything in their enormous archive (I recommend asking to see the Norman Norell and Pauline Trigere pieces).

FRIDAY ART PICK: Brant Kingman

If you're looking for a beautiful experience in Minneapolis, you'd better get to know Brant Kingman. From bronze casting to assemblage, fashion design to parties, Kingman always delights with his creations. We asked Kingman to talk about his artistic endeavors, and he generously obliged…

You work in a number of different styles and mediums - can you tell us a bit about your inspirations?

You're right. Life is so delicious I want to try it all. I've spent years making bronzes. But right now I'm focused on creating a museum tour of a series of giant tableaux I call Pop Art. For Pop Art, I make popular iconic images from pop cans using the can as a pixel. The initial inspiration was simple. One day I was running and noticed all these colorful aluminum cans squished on the road side. I thought, we're covering this country in trash. Then I thought, hey, there's a metaphor here. I could make a geopolitical map of the US using the cans we've trashed it with. It took seven years to collect the cans. Now I save them from my parties and it goes a lot faster.

How do you think the Minneapolis art scene has evolved?

The Minneapolis art scene has become much more integrated, especially music, fashion and art. The essence of the art scene is not so much object related as it is experiential. I'm happy to see a movement away from exclusivity toward inclusivity. Caryn Gustafson--who was 24 or 25 at the time, once said to me, "Brant I love your parties, they're the only place you can dance with an 80 year old man and have a great time."

You have a very interesting history...What was your most epic moment/experience?

I'm living the most epic moment of my life right now. If my life were an epic film, the panoply of characters and settings would be incredible. I treat billionaires and bums with equal respect. But I must say, I really appreciate the people who make an effort to express--gratitude, joy, love, anxiety, whatever it is, through some form of art. I love the talent in this city. I try to include an many talents as possible when I entertain so that people can get exposed to them. I don't like them to be separated from their audience. I like it all mixed up. That way life can be full of surprises.

You have very unique style and flair - how do you relate fashion to art?

I dress how I feel. If the clothes I have don't match the feeling I want to express, I think what could I do to make this more my style? For instance, I like the combination of Western (cowboy) style with fabrics like lace or mesh that might be considered feminine. I don't take myself too seriously. I think wigs are funny, jewelery can be funny. I believe people want to know each other. They're afraid to introduce themselves. I like to design clothes that give them easy access.

We love to come to parties at your studio! Are there any new events or projects you want to tell us about?

Well Kate, we've got the 7-7-7 party on July 7th with DJ Vision coming back from Chicago. A little further out, this September, I'll be hosting a bodypainting festival patterned after the World Bodypainting Festival my girlfriend, Kara, and I were invited to last summer in Austria. You can always check my web site, kingmanstudios.com, for the latest.

SUNDAY MUSIC PICK: Desdamona

Definitely a force to be reckoned with in the Minnesota music community, Desdamona is also one of the founders of this weekend's B-Girl Be Summit. Her new album, The Source, is also out this week! Even with all of these things going on, she took time out from her busy schedule to talk to us about her music, the Summit, and style…

Your new album, "The Source", hit shelves on June 26th - how has your sound evolved since your last album?

I think that the songs that I choose to put on this project are a bit more mature than on the last project & being able to work with LIVE instrumentation allowed me to stretch out a bit more than on the first full length.

You are a local female hip-hop icon - have you gotten a lot of response from younger girls in the scene?

I have....I see more and more girls stepping up to the mic. I'm not saying that I am the reason for that but I would like to think that maybe I've been influencial in bringing the female voice to the forefront in the local scene. Since I started I have had many conversations with young women who have wanted to step to the mic and all they needed was to see someone else doing it.

You are a founder and producer of the B-Girl B Summit - how did the Summit come about and how has it grown over the past 3 years?

It came about through the Intermedia Arts' series, "the Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Evolution". We were having an annual all female hip hop show and it was usually our most well attended show of the year. Intermedia took an interest in cultivating a relationship with women artists in the community and asked if I would be interested in taking it to a larger scale....and that's how the idea of B-Girl Be was born.We have gotten connected with so many woman over the past three years and I have seen the local scene burst into action. There are a lot of local women getting more attention than ever before. It's strength in numbers.

How would you describe your personal style? (p.s.-we love your hair!)

My personal style varies from day to day...sometimes it's B-Girl style, sometimes it's the peace, love and hippy-ness, tom boy, and sometimes I probably look like a soccer mom. ha! I like doing different things with my hair. Obviously it's a big part of my identity. I like to wear it up when I perform...I feel like I can be a little more sassy that way. I actually just got my hair cut...but it grows very fast! I donated it to "locks of love" I have enough hair for 3 people. Why should I keep it all for myself?!

FRIDAY ART PICK: Adam Garcia aka The Pressure

You've seen the design work of Minneapolis art dynamo Adam Garcia - whether it be packaging for your fave local hip hop cd, lush illustration on the wall of an art gallery, or even in l'étoile magazine itself! Garcia's signature style stands alone, but exudes marketability in international design trend as well. We were lucky enough to hook up with this up and coming artisté extraordinaire...

You've been involved in the Minneapolis art/music scene for quite sometime, collaborating with KHS, Will Work for Food, Rhymesayers, etc..What do you think about the scene and the people you've worked with?

My friends are the most motivating force in my life. I can truly say that everybody I know is incredible in some way, and that makes me feel like I'm a human living in a mansion full of creative hyper-intelligent aliens. And Minneap is great.

What inspired you to become an artist?

My mom and my aunts, especially my Aunt Chica. She introduced me to comics, Crumb, and Dungeons & Dragons when I was a little kid. I was like, "I will make things for the rest of my life." That and I'm horrible at math and business.

Your new t-shirt design is pretty rad - can you tell us the concept
behind it?

Thank you! It's a manifestation of the 2001 Experimental Jetset John&Paul&Ringo&George shirt that they did for 2K Gingham. I've seen different derivations of said shirt, and I thought that the rap-inspired silver foil Kick&Snare would be my contribution to that legacy.

Any new projects on the horizon?

Working on a storybook called The Calcification of the Phoenix that should be out around Fall. Trying to hustle my way into more gallery shows, do more illustration work and do freelance design under the name The Pressure. Performing under the name Snakebird and working as Art Director at Rhymesayers right now, so I'm staying busy.

What are the top 5 tracks on your ipod?

Hmm.
Big Quarters - Sign of the Time
Arcade Fire - Keep the Car Running
Aesop Rock - 5 Fingers
Mother Night - Fools Are You
CocoRosie - Madonna

SATURDAY JUNE 23RD-24TH

Pride Festival

@ Loring Park
Minneapolis

Saturday, June 23 10am - 10pm
Sunday, June 24 10am - 6pm

We've been polishing our tiaras in anticipation of this annual gathering, which draws hundreds of thousands of folks each year. For the inside scoop check out our interview with Twin Cities Pride PR dynamo Christopher Taykalo, then check the website for detailed event listings and times!

Twin Cities Pride is one of the top Pride Festivals in the country, how long did it take for that to evolve?

This year, the Twin Cities Pride Festival celebrates its 35th year! It began in 1972 when a small group of people gathered in Loring Park for a picnic followed by an impromptu march down Nicollet Mall. Our celebration has evolved to become the third
largest Pride celebration in the country drawing in excess of 430,000 people to six events in 2006. This year, for our first 3 events (Pride Art Show, Boat Cruise, and Father’s Day Picnic), we are already beginning to exceed our attendance figures from last year! The Pride Parade is the largest parade in the five-state region. Last year, according to local media reports, we drew over 110,000 spectators at the Parade alone.

What attractions would you recommend for a first-time Pride attendee?

I would recommend the five stages of entertainment in the park, seeing the history pavilion to learn more about the GLBT Pride movement, and of course, the Parade!

What will be the most glamorous Pride event?

Hmmm…I would say it is a toss up between the drag kings and queens entertaining on the Stonewall Stage or headliner Taylor Dayne on the Loring Stage Saturday evening before the Fireworks.

If you could choose one song to sum up TC Pride, what would it be?

“We Are Family” by Sister Sledge – without question.

Can we wear our tiaras?

Absolutely! Tiaras are encouraged.
